Wangerooge

The East Frisian Island Wangerooge

Wangerooge is one of the car-free East Frisian Islands. You can reach Wangerooge by ferry from Harlesiel. Once you arrive at the harbor of Wangerooge, you will get to the city by the so called island train. It is a relaxing train ride that offers the opportunity to have a first look at the nature of the island.

Wangerooge has – not only one but two - lighthouses. The older one is 39 meters high and offers a fantastic view over the island. Inside the old lighthouse you can find a museum with information about Wangerooge and the registry office. Many couples arrive from far away to get married there. You can be sure to get the nicest wedding pictures, because the registry office is 146 stairs up. The new lighthouse, built in 1966-67 is 60 meters high. Even today, its light leads the ships the right way.

The spa garden is a perfect place if you want to relax, play Boule, listen to music or watch the beautiful rose trees. In summer, there are many Open-Air events, which take place at a music pavilion. Another place to enjoy the nature and go for a walk is the “Teichgarten”. It is a nice park with a small pond. You can watch the fishes, water plants and enjoy the sun.

If you are travelling with your dog, you should not miss the dog beach. There are separate parts at the beach where the dogs do not have to be leashed. Apart from this area you have to make sure your dog is leashed, since parts of Wangerooge belong to the Wadden Sea National Park.

Wangerooge has two churches that are worth a visit. The catholic St. Willehad Church has a library where you can find readings for your vacation. It also offers pastoral work for tourists. In the Nikolai Church, there are events like concerts and other music events. If you prefer silence, it offers a “Room of Tranquility”, where you can practice meditation and yoga.
